Overview
The IFPA runs Ireland’s only clinic for the treatment of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). We provide free medical and psychological care for women and girls affected by FGM/C, including referral for surgical assessment when required.
To improve understanding and awareness of FGM/C, our Medical Director is available to provide a one-hour presentation on FGM/C to healthcare professionals and other service providers, such as social workers. These sessions can be held online or in person.
Topics covered
- Background to the practice of FGM/C
- FGM/C prevalence nationally and internationally
- Definition and classification of FGM/C
- Short- and long-term health consequences of FGM/C
- Possible presentations of FGM/C in the Irish healthcare system
- Overview of FGM/C consultation and management
